10 French songs that were subsequently adapted into English

Whenever I hear an English song which I think has been adapted from a French song, I often say to my husband: "Oh! I love the French original version."  To what my husband replies: "I think the original version is actually the English version." After a few "No, it isn’t." and “Yes, it is.", we agree to "Google" it.

I did a bit of research about "la chanson française" and I have decided to share with you a list of 10 French songs that were subsequently adapted into English. Sometimes, I must admit, the English version sounds better than the French one and/or was even more popular than the original version…

This is a non-exhaustive list so please add any song (preferably the two versions) you think of in a comment below if you wish!

1. La vie en rose by Edith Piaf (1947) / La vie en rose by Luis Armstrong (1950)

2. La mer by Charles Trénet (1946) / Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin (1959)

3. Pour toi by Dario Moreno (1957) / Feeling by Andy Williams

4. Et maintenant by Gilbert Becaud (1961) / What Now My Love by Elvis Presley (1973)

5. Amsterdam by Jacques Brel (1964) / Amsterdam by David Bowie (1973)

6. Un homme et une femme by Nicole Croisille et Pierre Baroud (1966) / A man And a Woman by Ella Fitzgerald (1971)

7. Il est mort le soleil by Nicoletta (1967) / The Sun Died by Ray Charles (1967)

8. Comme d’habitude by Claude François (1967) / My Way by Frank Sinatra (1969)

9. Le monde est stone by Fabienne Thibault (1978) / The World is Stone by Cyndi Lauper (1992)

10. Quand j’ai peur de tout by Patricia Kaas (1997) / Too lost in you by Sugababes (2003)
